A vegetable production row through one growing season

Matthew planned and managed a 55-by-4-foot production row through the 2025 growing season. He planted crops, replaced finished plantings, maintained and supported the garden, and harvested through the season.

He built three bamboo supports for rattlesnake beans and red Chinese yardlong beans in summer. Crops harvested from the class gardens went to Longwood’s flagship 1906 restaurant to be made into meals.

Structure and harvest

The row combined early greens, summer vegetables, and climbing crops. Red Chinese yardlong beans were a favorite for both their color and their harvest.

Crops were harvested as they matured while other plants continued growing in the row.

Crop care and harvest

Starting in late February 2025, he sowed and transplanted crops, replaced spent plantings, and cared for successive crops through fall.
