An individual perennial garden across two seasons

Matthew planned and cared for an individual 14-by-15-foot garden across two growing seasons, with instruction from Longwood Gardens outdoor landscape employees.

He installed three handwoven bamboo supports and new plants in late April 2025. The supports grounded the space for two years as climbers, annuals, and perennials developed around a narrow path.

Spring and late-season growth

New plants and handwoven supports were placed in late April 2025, with the growing season ahead of them.

Three handwoven bamboo supports

Matthew cut, split, and wove the bamboo by hand. The three supports helped shape the garden for two years, grounding the space as climbers and seasonal planting grew around them.

Flowers from the practicum garden

Matthew harvested annual and perennial flowers from this garden to make bouquets throughout the growing season. The plot supplied changing combinations of flowers, foliage, and texture alongside its continuing garden display.
